A Work in Progress, please continue checking back.
X-Men: Childhood's End was started in 2007 as a simple, fun RP on GreatestJournal, and grown tremendously since then.
The setting is A.U., though loosely based on 616.
At the start of it all there was one... One man with a dream, and a hope. Charles Xavier acted on that hope and built for himself a school. Initially he took in five, then unnamed students who would eventually come to be known as "The X-Men". A group dedicated to saving lives and projecting to the world that mutant kind were not the monsters made out to be by the media, and the misgivings of his long time friend Erik Lensherr, they fought for justice, and peace.
It wasn't always easy, as they can tell you now, living with one another, growing up with mutant powers, learning to be a normal teenager, as well as a super hero. They faced the trials of fitting in to normal society as well as facing off with Magneto's evil Brotherhood of Mutants, a small group of young people who had banded together under his rule to make his version of the dream come true. Eventually things quieted down, the Brotherhood seemed to disband, and life could go back to semi-normal.
Eventually Charles decided to open his school up to the rest of the world in secrecy, and under the guise of a school for gifted children he welcomed mutants in with open arms, promising to teach them to better control their gifts, and a life of safety from the world at large under the tutelage of his staff.
A wonderful dream that was not so beautifully executed.
The staff he had gathered together, while smart, were not always the best choices in dealing with teenagers who had been dealt a band hand in life. The children were not easy to handle, by any means, disrespecting authority, while many of the adults were used to control and order, and could not seem to grasp that concept with them. A handful of the staff left, while a brave few stuck around, and stuck it out with the children in order to help them through the problems they were having.
Life was certainly not a picnic, with the Thieves Guild coming in to the school after a boy named Remy LeBeau, who had apparently run away from them and caused an upstart. They were stopped along the way by staff and students, though many students did not make it without permanent damage. Julian Keller was physically scarred for life by Jean-Luc himself, and Kevin Ford was dealt enough emotional damage to send him down an ugly path in life. Students fled the school when things had been said and done, feeling themselves unsafe, scorning it for the trauma they suffered, while others actually left with the battered Guild to join them.
Life seemed to settle back in to a semi-normal routine, and gradually people stopped watching over their shoulders to see if someone was sneaking up behind them to put a knife in their back, though all good things must, obviously, come to an end. In April of 2008 Charles Xavier left the school to travel the world in search of mutants, to tell them they were not alone in their fight, leaving fallen prince, Namor McKenzie, and S.T.R.I.K.E. member Elisabeth Braddock as the heads of his school. As both a treat and a lesson in life for some of the older students, and a couple of the members of staff, Betsy took a group to the island paradise of Genosha to show the children how it was possible for mutants and humans to live in harmony. The night they arrived the island was raided by the military, the mutants were rounded up and put in pens in the desert with power nullifiers on them. They were to be harvested for an experimental study involving the building of what would soon become known as the mutant hunting robots, Sentinels.
Through the ingenuity of some students, and staff who had managed to keep their cool, the group escaped, created a riot, and fled back to the safety of the United States to recover.
It wasn't a long recovery, though, by any means. As they settled in to prepare for the graduation ceremonies, and some of the younger students decided to have celebrations of their own, some old friends came back to town. Three students that had fled after the events of Christmas, Jean-Paul Beaubier, Manuel de la Rocha, and Kevin Ford, had returned, the former two headed for college while Kevin returned to the school. It was clear from the start that the three of them were up to no good, and their motivation became even clearer when Jean-Paul kidnapped Laura Kinney from a gas station she was visiting with her teammate, and had her returned to the Weapon Plus facility. From there everything seemed to start falling apart. There were strange occurrance at the school, people weren't acting like they might normally, there were people shuffling around like they might possible be under someone's control, it was a disaster, and there was no fighting Jean-Paul, Kevin, or Manny, who seemed to be the ringleader.
They did their best in creating a larger rift between the students and teachers, even taking some of them in, either by force or otherwise, to work with them. And then the fated day came. Graduation, and with that came terror. Weapon Plus, with the help of the information the three spies had gathered for them, attacked the school with the intention of killing anyone that fought, and taking the rest of them alive to be returned to Weapon Plus for experimentation purposes. Leading the front lines was X-23 herself, having gone through enough intensive brainwashing to destroy the barriers she'd built up in an attempt to adapt to the rest of the world, and while the X-Men and comrades certainly saved the day, lives were still lost, and the damage was done. There were students and adults alike who would be traumatized by that day for the rest of their lives.
The school spent the entirety of the summer attempting to recover with the help of the Avengers while the remaining student body did what they needed to do in order to prepare themselves for the next year, and get in to the habit of remembering that there was no safe place for mutants.
The recent attacks had jaded them, enough damage done that perhaps not a single one of them would ever forgive what had been done.
While the summer was, for the most part, quiet, new faces began popping up that named themselves threats to mutant kind. Friends of Humanity struck strategically all over the country kidnapping faces such as the entire Guthrie family, and former Brotherhood members John Allerdyce and Dominic Petros. They also managed to grab Manuel de la Rocha from their home in Texas, Molly Hayes, Jean Grey, and other famous faces such as Johnny Storm, former member of the fantastic four, and Gert Yorkes, a well known runaway in California. The X-Men managed to step in and save the day, though not before a man named Graydon Creed showed his face, and made himself a serious threat.
With the new school year came a fresh start, though, and things seemed to go off without a bang the entirety of the first week. It wasn't until the second week had nearly finished when six Sentinels landed on the lawn of the school demanding total surrender or absolute destruction. While the staff fought to fend the students off, the students fled to a room where teleportation devices had been set up, and hearded by Madrox dupes with the help of some of the older students, the student body managed to be safely transported to California, and the headquarters of X-Factor: Investiagtions, an operation headed by Victor Borkowski that had been started in early April. While the students waited, confused and frightened, the staff, and the remaining students, fought off the Sentinels, destroying each of them in turn.
It didn't matter, though, the school had been completely destroyed and there was fresh damage that had been done. Deciding the school could do better without her, a debate that had been on her mind for months, Betsy stepped down from her post as headmistress, and with a Cuckoo in tow, headed for a higher calling.
This time life did not die down to something dull, as the school was rebuilt and students settled in to their general routine, the world began nail biting in anticipation of who would be the next President of the United States, while in Spain our old friends Manny, Jean-Paul, and Kevin had returned quietly under the guise of doctors working in a state penitentiary. No longer funded by Weapon Plus, and with only the diabolical Mister Sinister to back them, the group worked with the help of recruits Cessily Kincaid and Theresa Cassidy to prepare their place of work for a mass arrival.
In late October they began striking, picking off students one by one here and there, before eventually doing a complete and total takeover of the school, leaving behind only a handful of bodies. Those left behind were forced to put their differences aside with people like The Brotherhood of Mutants, X-Factor: Investigations, and The Thieves Guild in order to band together and get their missing comrades and friends returned to them.
The battle was ugly, and lives were not spared, but eventually they managed to get their people home where they attempted to help with recovery while the world celebrated their new president.
Graydon Creed.
In what was apparently a mass write in election, Gradyon Creed managed to steal the vote by a landslide, and was chosen to be the next president of the United States.
Groups like Church and Friends of Humanity, both of which had simply been background noise committing mutant hate crimes, suddenly made themselves more well known, committing mass murders in areas like Detroit, Los Angeles, and New York over Thanksgiving. Hundreds, if not thousands, of lives were lost, and the United States was certainly not in the clear of Sentinels, which rampaged through Detroit not long after.
